The California Missile And The Conspiracy Tourists
On Monday 8th , eyewitnesses were shocked to see what appeared to be a missile launch north of Catalina Island. The incident was video-recorded and on the internet within hours, showing a vapor trail heading northwest from the Californian coast. Yet the Pentagon hasn't got any answers, leaving the usualy wave of conspiracy theories to fill the void.
Popular among the many suggestions out there is that the launch was somehow a show of American military strength, displayed to coincide with President Obama's diplomatic trip to Asia. Regardless, the Pentagon hasn't received any knowledge of a launch from Navy, Air Force and Missile Defense Agency sources. Other theories point to something far more benign: the vapor trail could merely be coming from a plane, flying at a particular angle in particular lighting conditions. But the idea that someone at the end of the trail was merely on a Fly Drive USA tour is significantly less sensational.
There is perhaps a greater link between conspiracy and tourism than this wayward aircraft sighting. The southern states are particularly blessed by the association with some of the greatest American conspiracies. Dallas, Texas is crammed full of people trying to see for themselves the value of the grassy knoll as a vantage point. The alien speculations that fuel visits to Roswell, New Mexico. And how many space-centre visitors on Florida holidays have been disappointed by the lack of a moon-landing room behind the curtain? Museums and other tourist traps are so frequently stale representations of history, so perhaps it's unsurprising that people find the allure of History, raw and untold, irresistible.
The state of Nevada also benefits from conspiracy tourism, having its connection to Area 51 as a money-spinner. But Nevada has always been an unusual state when it comes to tourism, offering sights and sounds that are truely unique. The casinos and bright lights alone of Las Vegas holidays are attractive enough, but in the 1950's people would come on holiday to see the atomic explosions happening at the Nevada Test Site. If people were to start heading for California to see mysterious missile launches, stranger things have happened...

Frequently Asked Questions...
We have a brake light problem on our 1959 Pontiac Catalina.?
We were told it may be caused by a bad directional switch. We obtained an old one and replaced it but that didn't help. Sometimes the brake lights work and sometimes they don't with no set pattern on what is causing that. Any ideas? What does a brake light switch do. I have seen that also on ebay and other sites. Would that need replaced? Thanks for any help.
Answer:
If I remember my old switches right. They told you a half truth. There are two switches.
The brake switch which is an on-off switch and is mounted on the top of the brake pedal. It does go bad, but usually needs to be adjusted every decade or so. Screw the switch in or out until it is off with the pedal released and on with the pedal depressed. When on, it sends the current to the directional switch. If it needs replacing, due to it being common, the switch is stocked at parts stores for under $20.
And the directional switch which is mounted on the steering column behind the dash. In most cases the switch does not go bad but gets knock out of adjustment and does not work because it is not centered. Due to contacts moving inside the switch, it has three positions;
Left: Blinker current to the left light, brake current to right light.
Center: Brake current to both lights.
Right: Brake current to left light, blinker current to right light.
When off center, the sliding contacts will stop between the wires. Simply the switch is positioned in dead spots between settings and slop from wear gives the no set pattern.
With the turn signal arm in the center position, and the brake pedal depressed. Loosen the switch's hold down screws. Slide the switch back and forth until both lights are on. Tighten screws and test the left and right signals. Sometimes (due to the turn signal arm bending) you have to enlarge the hold down holes to give more adjustment.
P.S. you may want to open up and clean the switch. 50 years and the grease inside has turned to wax and the brass contacts have tarnished. But be gentle. There are 3 springs and 3 sliders moving inside and the Bakelite (plastic) has turned very brittle.
