'For Colored Girls' the play
Ntozake Shange in 1975 wrote "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf." The play is a combination of poems that, combined, tell the story of seven different black women. The identification of the women is done by the color they wear. Lady in Red and Lady in Green are examples of this. The play had been nominated for a Tony award for Best Play in 1977, and has been awarded the Drama Desk Award, Theater World Award, and Tony Award for Best Featured Actress.
'For Colored Girls' as a movie
Tyler Perry is directing the movie “For Colored Girls” after writing and producing it. Tyler Perry's participation in the "For Colored Girls" movie has been questioned by many people. In the end, though, the adaptation appears to be mostly adequate, if awkward at specific moments. The poems in the play are supposed to be re-created with the movie. The “For Colored Girls” movie script had been worked this way. Sometimes it is powerful. It is moving too. From time to time the poems don’t really work. They just are distracting.
Strong 'For Colored Girls' performances
The performances were strong in the movie. That was the best part of the “For Colored Girls” movie. There were such strong women in the movie. This made for a stronger movie too. Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson and Macy Gray are all in the movie. They all do well in their parts. The movie feels a bit “off” sometimes. This is likely because of the “old” feeling that comes with the 1975 language. "For Colored Girls" is surely a movie worth seeing, but, if you have the chance, seeing the play would be a better idea. youtube.com/watch?v=sDWU_cFU9ZA
