Options for Small Cardboard Boxes
Small cardboard boxes are available in many forms and shapes. While criteria might differ, generally a diagonal of 14 inches or less across the largest of the box's dimensions is what defines a cardboard box as small. It terms of content, small cardboard boxes can store and be the shipping container for any item except for fragile, perishable or potentially hazardous merchandise. Special arrangements can be made for fragile items to be accommodated in special shipping containers and insulation foam and other packaging helpers utilized to make their life expectancy as high as possible.
Perishable items can be hurt by both transportation and time. The detrimental effect of shipping short-lasting food etc. by means of commercial carriers can be mitigated by individually wrapping items up in polystyrene mesh, packaging peanuts and heavier packing paper. These will provide cushion and safer environment while in transit. The walls of the cardboard boxes are made of corrugated flutes which contain air. Depending on the flute size, the amount of air can vary and provide some sort of barrier protection against weather and sudden temperature changes. This is all relative and will only work short term. If a perishable item is delayed due to logistical reasons, time will certainly work its magic and render it useless.
Potentially hazardous items are not allowed in shipments since they pose a threat to everyone starting with courier and post office employees. Liquids are an example of potentially hazardous item. Liquids traveling in a glass container which is then placed in a large or small cardboard box are even worse since their lifespan is dependent on the mood of a UPS delivery person and hence their destiny is unknown and unpredictable.
Special custom foam shippers are available to accommodate the peculiarities of strange shipments. Using other items such as loose fill, polystyrene packaging peanuts and bubble wrap would naturally increase chances for a shipment to reach the destination unharmed. Items of extreme weight, odd size or extraordinarily fragile such as special artwork or fine china should not be shipped via a commercial channel. Special shipping arrangements should be made instead.
