How can I motivate my mom to clean up?
My house is a complete and total mess. I'll be honest, I am as much of a contributor as she is to the mess, but I make an effort to clean. She has bags and bags full of papers and envelopes, books and random things that were strewn about. But, she refuses to go through them and sort these papers- she admits that she never feels like it. How can I get her to sort through all of the papers?
Answer:
Get a calendar, and sit down with your mom, and pick a day and time when you will help her work through one room or one pile. Get a timer, a shredder, some trash bags, etc. Make the coffee, and be pleasant. Then stay with her while she does it, being helpful, like doing the shredding, or hauling out the trash to the bin. Help her put like with like, It would be great if you had a clear space to work in like some shelves or a folding table for sorting.
Once the "paper monster" gets out of hand, it's hard to tame. It will take several attempts to get it under control, if it is as bad as you say.
I actually have quite a paper monster myself, and I've been working on it, a little at a time. I just found 2 laundry baskets full of papers that need my attention. It can be done, the same way you eat an elephant--one bite at a time.
