Packing And Moving Wine
Anyone who has ever moved to another location knows how strenuous the process can be. Packing all your items can be quite a chore, especially when they are fragile. These items in particular can break easily if you don't go the extra mile to protect them. Not to mention that our most fragile items most of the time happen to be our most valuable. No one wants their precious belongings to get damaged while transported to their new home. For some, wine is one of their most cherished and valuable possessions.
Wine collections can be worth millions. So the idea of having it shipped can be very stressful for the owners. It's not just about making sure that the bottles don't get damaged, though this is pretty important. It's about making sure that the flavor and the color stay as they are as well. If exposed to extreme temperatures, these two characteristics could be altered. The older and more expensive the wine is, the more susceptible it is to these changes.
The ideal temperature for wine to be stored in is 55 degrees. The best way to transfer it is by car, as the climate can be controlled much more there than in a moving truck. Moving trucks can get very hot and cold, which would be very damaging to wine. If you aren't driving yourself, then can hire a temperature-controlled wine transportation company.
Packing wine into styrofoam is recommended because it provides thorough protection of each wine bottle and insulation. You can either use styrofoam boxes or inserts that go into a cardboard box. Some people choose to just wrap their bottles in packing paper, and lay them down in rows with protection in between. Use at least two sheets of paper for each bottle, and tape the wrapping to make it more secure. You can place more packing paper in between rows, styrofoam, or bubble wrap. The very top of the box should also be filled with one of these materials as well.
If you are flying and only have a couple of bottles to transport, then you can take them with you on your flight. There are wine luggage carriers that you can place them in, and this is highly recommended. Being on a plane, they are more susceptible to being damaged or leaking.
While packing wine is extremely important, using the right moving box is equally as such. Using the wrong box can make or break your wine collection during the move.
